GRADUATION DAE 2020

“I hope this installation can cause people to stand still from time to time and take a moment to interact with themselves.”

A mirror image is not the same as a reflection.

We use mirrors to check our appearance, while accidental reflections in a shop window or a telephone screen have another, deeper effect on our self-image.

A reflection brings a shift in perspective and can make you wonder whether you are walking straight or realise how long you have been looking at your phone. Reflections can help us understand ourselves and get in touch with our emotions.

The ‘Reflective Compass’ contains rotating tubes with black vinyl forms behind transparent reflective glass. Against the black background, your reflection is more focused.
The rotation then causes a rhythm of changing reflections: from focused to vague and back again.

OYSTER STONE

Oyster shells can be transformed into a stone-like material and be reintroduced into the hospitality industry as platters to serve oysters on.

The platters emphasise the experience of enjoying oysters with relation to their origin.
Normally oysters shells are processed in bigger industries for paint, chicken food or fertiliser.

In smaller restaurants, the shells just end up as waste and are burned.
I focused on Ostend, a coastal city in Belgium where there is a big source of oyster shells due to many seafood restaurants.

By looking at this material from a circular economy perspective and attributing value to it can lead to more efficient use.

The thought behind this ceramic tableware was taking a disused nostalgic object and applying it in modern, practical design.
At home, dozens of chairs made by my grandparents are stacked somewhere in the back of a garage. I used parts of these to create moulds for creating ceramic tableware. This way, furniture that otherwise wouldn’t be anything but nostalgic is given a new function in everyday life.

Sharing bread has always been a symbol of togetherness and friendship. With the OLIVIA dip board, bread is eaten together in a playful way. When you start eating, a landscape comes to life; you pour the olive oil and it flows like a river between the hills, and when the salt and pepper are sprinkled, it looks like grass growing on the hills. As you sweep the bread along the peaks, the river is drained and the mountains are swept clean.
Until the spectacle starts over.

Rope jar is a small project started with a fascination for rope.
Trough some knots studies I found some nice compositions that were translated as handles for jars.
